The Latest: Israel threatens more attacks on Iran after Tehran retaliates with missile strikes 5j2v4y

  • Updated

Israel has warned of more attacks on Iran after Tehran fired waves of missiles and drones that killed three people and wounded dozens in Israel. Iran was retaliating for a series of blistering Israeli attacks on its nuclear and military facilities on Friday. Israel said hundreds of airstrikes over the past two days also killed nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran’s nuclear program, in addition to several top generals. Iran’s U.N. ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded. Oman said talks between Iran and U.S. over Iran's nuclear program scheduled for Sunday have been canceled.

Minnesota's slain Democratic leader saw liberal victories, then brokered a budget deal out of power 2ce60

  • Updated

Slain Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman was the state House's top Democrat and as House speaker helped shepherd a package of liberal initiatives to age two years ago. After Democrats lost their majority, she helped broker a deal to keep state government funded and provided a crucial vote to it, though her party hated it. Hortman was shot to death early Saturday in her Minneapolis-area home by someone posing as a law enforcement officer. Another prominent lawmaker, state Sen. John Hoffman, was shot and wounded in his home about 15 minutes away. Hoffman chairs the Senate committee overseeing human services spending, while Hortman had been House Democrats' leader since 2017.

Trump curbs immigration enforcement at farms, meatpacking plants, hotels and restaurants 1w5s2s

  • Updated

The Trump istration has directed immigration officers to pause arrests at farms, restaurants and hotels after President Donald Trump expressed alarm about the impact of aggressive enforcement. The move comes after Stephen Miller, chief architect of Trump’s immigration policies, said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would target 3,000 arrests a day, up from about 650 a day during the previous five months. The New York Times reports the directive Thursday told ICE to halt workplace investigations in key industries. A U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity confirmed the contents of the order.

Putin and Trump discussed Middle East tensions, Ukraine war in phone call 4sh6a

  • Updated

Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have held a lengthy phone call to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East and Ukraine peace talks. Trump in a posting on his Truth Social platform said they spent the bulk of Saturday's conversation focused on Israel's ongoing blistering attacks aimed at decapitating Iran's nuclear program and Iran's retaliatory strikes. Trump said that he also pressed Putin to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin briefed Trump on his recent talks with the leaders of Iran and Israel and reiterated Russia’s proposal to seek mutually acceptable solutions on the Iranian nuclear issue.

Israel's attack on Iran marks moment of truth for Netanyahu 2l491a

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on the mission of his lifetime. For years, the veteran leader has made the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program his top priority. Now Netanyahu’s moment of truth has arrived. After battling Iran’s allies across the region following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack, Netanyahu has turned his attention to what he describes as the “head of the octopus,” with an unprecedented and open-ended military offensive against Iran and its nuclear program. It is an aggressive gamble made possible by a confluence of factors. But success is not guaranteed, and the outcome of the operation could determine the fate of Netanyahu’s government and shape his legacy.

Israelis are uneasy as they prepare for more Iranian missiles m5p31

  • Updated

A palpable tension settled over an eerily quiet Tel Aviv as residents anticipated another round of missiles to be fired from Iran, which is under intense attack from the Israeli military. Iran’s retaliatory strikes late Friday — a barrage of drones and missiles mostly shot down by Israel’s defenses — killed at least three people in the greater Tel Aviv area, and wounded dozens. Most stores and restaurants were closed Saturday across the Mediterranean city, though some ice cream shops remained open. A smattering of people gathered with friends in parks, while staying close to public bomb shelters. Tel Aviv’s beaches, normally packed, had fewer sunbathers. Uneasy Israelis huddled over their phones for updates about the escalating conflict with Iran.

Trump istration gives personal data of immigrant Medicaid enrollees to deportation officials 5u6v5k

  • Updated

President Donald Trump's istration has released to deportation officials the personal data for millions of Medicaid enrollees, including their immigration status. That's according to an internal memo and emails obtained by The Associated Press. Trump officials have been reaching deep into communities across the country to ramp up deportations and fought for the health data on immigrants from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The dataset released this week includes the information of people living in California, Illinois, Washington state and Washington, D.C., which all allow immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally to enroll in relatively new Medicaid programs that pay for their expenses using only state taxpayer dollars.
