Unions Reject GOB’s Offer, Refuse to Accept Less Than Requested

The dispute between the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), the Public Service Union (PSU), the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM), and the Government of Belize (GOB)over the Salary increase has intensified in recent weeks. Industrial action and public demonstrations have escalated, culminating last week with BNTU taking to the highways, where they reported “mechanical failures” with their vehicles, which were parked to block main roads in Belmopan, Orange Walk, and Belize City during peak hours.

SIB Reports Consumer Prices Rise and Exports Fall

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) released its latest economic data near the end of May, painting a challenging picture for the national economy. Belizean consumers are feeling the effects of rising prices, while trade activity has slowed considerably. According to the SIB's April 2025 report, released on May 29th, the national Consumer Price Index (I) rose by 1.3% compared to April 2024. This indicates that the cost of everyday goods and services, such as groceries and transportation, continues to increase, putting pressure on household budgets nationwide.

“Buy Belizean” Campaign launched to promote Local Economic Growth

The Government of Belize, through the Office of the Prime Minister and the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), recently launched a national initiative aimed at boosting local economic activity and ing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The "Buy Belizean" campaign and its innovative Loyalty Program port were soft-launched on Friday, May 30th, during the National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) in Belmopan.

Postmortem rules Selvin Sealy’s death as homicide, family demands answers

On Saturday, May 17th, Selvin Sealy Jr., 32, was laid to rest in San Pedro Town. The island resident died in police custody after he was apprehended for tresing on private property south of San Pedro earlier in the week. While family are questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, police on the island say the matter is under investigation, and a file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further advice.

American who hijacked plane in Belize was trying to reach Texas

On Thursday, April 17th, the country was shocked when a Cessna 208EX Grand Caravan carrying 14 engers, including a child, belonging to Tropic Air, was hijacked by a man wielding a knife. The hijacker, Akinyela Taylor, a 49-year-old U.S. citizen, demanded that the pilot take the plane out of the country, specifically to Texas, USA. His demands were not met, and during the ordeal, three individuals were injured. Taylor was ultimately shot and killed by one of the engers upon landing at the Philip Goldson International Airport.

San Pedro man detained for alleged bigamy

On Wednesday, February 5th, San Pedro Police formally arrested and charged 61-year-old Edermillo Javier Azebedo, also known as Edermillo Javier Garcia, with the crime of Bigamy. This arrest followed a complaint from his first wife, who alleges that he secretly married another woman while still legally married to her.

122 students graduate from the San Pedro High School Class of 2025

The 2025 graduating class of San Pedro High School (SPHS) had commencement exercises on Saturday, June 7th, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. The graduation ceremony featured presentations, inspirational speeches, and the distribution of diplomas. The ceremony began at 4PM and was presided over by Samantha Santos and Zsapphirrah Coleman as the Mistresses of Ceremonies. The anticipated celebration, attended by ecstatic parents and friends, lasted more than two hours and highlighted the accomplishments of 122 students, who were awarded numerous awards of distinction and high school diplomas.

San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School Hosts Education Fair

On Friday, May 30th, the San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School hosted an education expo showcasing a variety of island initiatives, local businesses, and engaging activities for students. The event featured booths from financial institutions, environmental organizations, and government agencies. Held from 9AM to midday, the fair welcomed students from various class levels, who interacted with exhibitors and participated in hands-on learning experiences.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks Remain Undefeated in the BPBL

San Pedro’s premier basketball team, the Tiger Sharks, continues its undefeated run in the Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL). On June 7th, the team traveled to Dangriga Town in southern Belize, where they edged out the EZ Investment Dangriga Dream Ballers 77-74. The following day, they defeated the Capital City Kings 89-77 in Belize City.

San Pedro Lil Sharks Crowned Back-to-Back Champions of the Co-Ed Softball Tournament

Team San Pedro Lil Sharks fiercely defended their title against Re/Max to take home the top trophy at the 2025 Co-Ed Softball Tournament on Sunday, June 8th. The decisive match was held at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Arena, following a spirited third-place game between the Crushers and Marlins, which delivered an electrifying atmosphere as both teams showcased their skills. While the Lil Sharks emerged as champions, the Marlins claimed third place.

On Saturday, May 10th, the San Pedro Town Council organized a spectacular Mother’s Day Extravaganza at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas Field). The event transformed the venue into a lively hub filled with love, laughter, and entertainment, running from 6PM until 3 AM. The community came together to celebrate and honor the amazing mothers. A highlight of the evening was the award for Mother of the Year, which was presented to Bertha Graniel.

The San Pedro Marching Bands entertains island community during appreciation show

On Saturday, April 26th, the San Pedro Town Council hosted the highly anticipated Marching Bands Appreciation Show at Ambergris Stadium. This event was organized to honor the contributions of the marching bands from San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) and San Pedro High School (SPHS) to the community spirit. It attracted large crowds of residents and visitors alike, who paid a small ission fee of $3, which was donated to the bands.
